Happy New Year!

Today is Chinese (and other Lunar-based) New Year. The Asian community in Austin puts on a nice dragon dancing and fireworks show and for once Patita and I made it to the festivities. Click through for more pictures.

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, it’s the Year of the Dog, which is my year. So respect me or I might bite. Or at least sy something mean.

Finally, know your dragons. There might be a quiz or something.

UT Tower, In Orange

Hey! UT won the national college football title! Wow! And that, of course, means tower that’s all lit up. So here’s a picture of it for those of you who either can’t get to Austin in time to see it or who are just too lazy to make the drive and face the crowds.

Did I say “crowds?” ‘Cos I gotta tell ya, it was awful crowded around campus last night. The highlght, which I didn’t manage to capture with my camera, was the jacked-up jeep with three or four pairs of longhorn horns scattered about that was also blaring a recording of the Longhorn band playing “The Eyes of Texas” and the Texas fight song while stuck in traffic right in front of the LIttlefield Fountain (which is pictured in the foreground of this shot, in case you don’t know what/where that is).

In any case, hook ‘em!

Detail, 37th Street Xmas Lights

Originally uploaded by yongi.

In Austin, the folks who live on 37th Street love them some Christmas lights. Patita and I took an Xmas Eve stroll down the lane ad took many, many phots. There are the traditional displays and some not-so-traditional types as well.

Click through to see the whole photoset at Flickr. There’s a little something for everyone this time of year.

Merry merry one and all. Even if you’d prefer “Happy” or some other well-wish.

Identifiying the root culture

Detail, Cathedral of Junk

Originally uploaded by yongi.

Detail of a decorative axe. The question, though is whether this a Minoan double axe or one from some other culture? The overall shape is definitely Minoan, but the design seems somehow more Viking or Celtic.

No matter. This isn’t archaeology 101. It’s just another fine picture from the Cathedral of Junk. Enjoy it as such. And leave the ponderings to me.

Return to the Cathedral of Junk

Detail, Cathedral of Junk

Originally uploaded by yongi.

November 12th is the birthday of the Cathedral of Junk. November 13th is my birthday. Patita and Mo went in together and got me a right nice camera, which I promptly took down to the Cathedral for some high res picture takin’ – at night no less! Click through and see what there is to see.

The yellower pics were shot in candlelight mode and are, I think, the loveliest of the bunch. But the new camera’s got a powerful flash, too, so those shots give you some serious detail – especially since the thing shoots at 7.2 MP(!), which is a little more than my last camera…

Double D Statuary, I-35

Triceratops

Originally uploaded by yongi.

If you’ve driven between Austin and Dallas within the past 10 years and you’ve glanced over to the east side of I-35 just north of Temple, you’ve seen the Double D Statuary Factory Outlet. It’s a great big lot full of cement statues of all shapes and sizes, some painted, some raw.

In any case, after countless drivebys in which we promised that we’d stop “the next time” Patita and I finally pulled over yesterday on our way back from a quick trip to see some baseball.

This exceedingly large Triceratops, and so very many other things, caught our eyes and tickled our cameras. You can view more just by clicking on the big guy.
