I’m posting this for you, Lono. And you should immediately know why. I don’t remember who won that particular night, but I do know it makes for one of the best “I had a lame, dorky high school expereince” stories ever.
For the rest of you: This is a picture of Talisman, the bestest board game ever. It’s kinda like playing Dungeons & Dragons, but as one who is dear to me put it, far less stilted. There’s not really any “I am a dwarf, dressed in leather, I killed three goblins. Will you join my quest?” and other forced interaction. Instead, you grab a character and go beat up on everything in sight until you kill all the other players and are the last one left standing.
The aforementioned Lono and I played the hell out of this game in our youths. My own copy went the way of many things and is no longer in my possession. But when the discussion turned decidedly geeky over dinner with a couple herself and I dine with recently, it unearthed another Talisman player. After he and I finished squealing like little girls over the prospect of actually playing everyone was excited enough to give it a try.
What you see here is the middle portion of the game. I looked like a threat to win at this point, all buff and tough as the Warrior of Chaos. Instead, though, that pesky Minstrel (played by herself, of course) beat us all to a bloody pulp before the night was out.
The bad news for those of you who are interested in the game is that it is out of print and can be quite expensive on Ebay. The good news, though, is that a new version is expected to be released in October. So if you’ve ever wanted to be a geek, your best chance is coming back around.
This just in, a computer version of Talisman is also coming later this year. Will the wonders never cease?

Ooh, and all for platforms we don’t have. Le sigh. At least we can score the new edition of the board game.
By the way, I couldn’t let you win at Talisman, because then you’d lord it over me like you do Trivial Pursuit!

Yes indeed – that night of non-debauchery is a Thing of Legend!
This is quite a “plate of shrimp” for me as I had just read this last week:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/04/16
“There were some choice bits to come out of Capcom’s recent Gamer’s Day, but of course I zero right in on the one nobody cares about: Talisman is coming to Live Arcade and PSN. I could fill yet another blank screen with text about how there is this sacred, unrecognized kinship between analog and digital gamers, an extended family we can trace and catalog with Mormon precision. I wont. But Talisman is a classic, almost universal board game concept and seeing it go digital is like inhaling aerosol joy”
Although I also lack these platforms – I could not agree more with the above authors enthusiam…
And – as luck has it – I found my original copy – in excellent condition – in my fathers attic but two Chirstmas’s ago!
And it – along with my mint copy of Dark Tower – shall never be touched by the unclean hand of E-Bay!
I mean – what price should I put upon my childhood!??
(turns out $300,000 – enough to pay off my house will do it – but not a penny less I say!)

Ah, “plate of shrimp” in and of itself was a “plate of shrimp” as not long before you wrote this I picked up the “collector’s edition” of Repo Man, though in the house buying/moving madness I’ve yet to watch it. But still, plate of shrimp all the same.
I’m glad to know that you still have your copy, amigo. And it’s even crazier that you’ve got Dark Tower still. I thought I remembered us breaking that at some point. Oh well, hooray for my faulty memory.
The more I read/see about the upcoming re-release the more excited I am. Bring on the Pit Fiends!
