The 2005 Houston Astros won the National League pennant. And that’s something no other Astros team had ever acheived before. They also made it to the World Series. Granted, they didn’t win it all, but they came closer than 28 other teams. And that, my friends, is quite an accomplishment for a team that was (as no one would let us forget) 15 games under .500 back in May. (Side note: I think 15-30 is actually 7.5 games under .500, since the number of games they’d played at that point was 45, and half of 45 is 22.5 &ndash which is 7.5 games more than 15. But I digress and I’m sure baseball fans don’t care about my rational approach to math).
The 2005 Houston Astros were a team with many stories and many unbelievable moments. This is a year I will remember forever and I am proud as hell to call myself an Astros fan, even as I sit watching the other guys celebrate. Cheers to them. I hope they choke on it. I hope that somewhere down the line they all taste a little ash knowing that their victory in the World Series wasn’t entirely clean – that some blown calls and questionable umpiring paved the way to their triumph. But enough with the bitter. Well done, Chicago. And hey, on the plus side, you goons have given me some new players to hate with a passion I normally reserve for certain key members of the Atlanta Braves.
Again, I’m damned proud of the season the Astros put together this year. I’m proud of each and every one of the fine gentlemen who took to the field wearing the star. And me? I’ll be wearing my cap tomorrow and beyond. It’s what loyal fans do, you know. Oh, and it just wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t say… Just wait ’til next year!
